These are difficult times for a lot of people. Health problems plague some, and the economy is a concern for many. Uncertainty is ever present.
I’ve spoken with a number of “real people” in my frequent travels who have shared their concerns for the future. Peole seem to be more stressed than ever before in trying to achieve “perfection” or at least perceived perfection to try to secure their jobs.
The news of course tends to give little reason to relax. Broadcasts tend to be filled with sad and scary stories. Maybe the good stories just don’t merit being called “news.” This can make the media itself pretty depressing; more so than whatever is even being reported on.
I am then forced to ponder how all of this stress and negativity affects our health. I’ve done enough research already to know that it affects us in detrimental ways. Our psychological and physical health suffer.
Stress leads to so many health problems. Headaches, hypertension and a myriad of others. This means that a lot of people are now dealing with the original worries as well as health issues. How is a person supposed to get through this?
I am a firm believer in positive thinking. I do not mean living in denial of life’s problems. But I do mean it is healthier to deal with those problems with positive action. It may take work and time, but you can do something about just about everything.
One very interesting study reveals that about 6 months after a major life change people are basically equally content. This holds for a person who experienced say a major car accident along with the person who came into a windfall of money.
And I’m not referring to just the overall attitude here. The average person in both of these situations ends up equally happy. This pretty much confirms that the things we believe will makes our lives much better are not necessarily the real keys to happiness.
We should absolutely work to improve our lives. It’s just important to be aware that the journey toward that improvement (be it new home furnishings, new job, finishing college etc.) is creating the contentment more so than the actual reward itself. So enjoy the journey.
A lot of people end up worrying as a way of addressing problems rather than enacting positive plans.
Overall, Ive realized that people are extremely joyful when they commit to working to cure or at least treat health problems. Making strides along the way adds to that happiness.
This same thought process can be applied to money worries or relationship problems. Take positive steps no matter how small to work toward improvement. It will pay off far more than hoping for a magic cure.
I also find that knowing my work will help someone makes me extremely happy. My work can be my biggest source of frustration at times, but knowing it’s going to help someone is worth it all.
We need to have fun along the way because the world is actually an amazing place.
