It can be pretty exciting to read that the expected starting salary for an MBA can be up to $90,000 US. But the reality unfortunately is often quite different and what you actually earn can be disappointing.

The Financial Times uses weighted salary as one of its key factors when making their yearly ranking of MBA schools. Many factors play a role in determining salary.

First off, students with MBAs have varied backgrounds in both their educational background and their work experience. It’s likely that they will be employed in different businesses as well. Salaries can differ markedly from one business to another.

Starting salaries for a HR Manager with his MBA, according to Payscale, is between $41,000 US and $92,000 US. On the other hand, again according to Payscale, a Financial Controller can be paid from $53,000 US right up to $126,000 US. Potential salaries are affected by the particular industry where the MBA candidate is applying along with his prior experience, the market in the region, and how well the job seeker can negotiate.

The median salary according to GMAC (the Graduate Management Admission Council) is about $94,000 US. However a lot of criticism has been leveled at them for the way in which they gathered the data they used. Their salary numbers appear to be inflated. In 2009, Payscale on the other hand, listed the average starting salary for those having MBAs and with less than a single year of year experience at $49,925 US. And those MBA graduates having up to four years of work experience were only earning a starting salary of $55,525 US.

MBA graduates from the Northeastern regions of the United States made on average $11,000 US more when compared to those graduating with an MBA from other areas of the country. A Norwegian School of Business graduate with an MBA made 36 per cent more money after graduation - with the average annual salary coming in at $100,000. To compare this, the average annual salary of public sector employees in Norway is $72,000 US.

The most reliable way to see what salary you might earn is to look at the industry you’re hoping to be employed in after completing your MBA program. Keep your expectations low initially, because you won’t be the CEO of a company, unless you’re going to be an Entrepreneur and it’s your own company. When you start out, prior work experience is going to be more important than any degree you’ve earned.
