There are many threats we face in our society, one of which is identity theft. The crime and the simple thought of it is enough to stress us out and make us fear what could happen. And even if it hasnt happened to us or our friends, its quite frightening to know of its realm of probability.

One reason it happens is because people dont understand how it happens. If people understood the methods to prevent identity theft, it would be a far rarer case. Understanding the causes behind an event is vital.

Quite possibly the most common mistake people make is creating simple passwords for sensitive materials. Short or simple passwords are easy to remember, but are also easy to uncover by thieves. The usage of symbols and numbers is necessary to protect against them.

Something almost everyone knows to do is to shred all documents that contain important personal information. However, if you do not cross shred them, then it is plausible for someone to piece your papers back together and steal whatever information there was. It happens a lot, though it may seem like a burden for the thief.

If you ever receive calls from solicitors over the phone, be cautious, as its possible the person is not actually from a group, and that they simply intend to swindle you out of your money. The term for this act is vishing, and its slowly creeping its way into our communities. Phone solicitation is bad enough, but it could be worse if the person on the other end isnt trying to sell you anything.

We all get spam, and its usually always from people we dont know. In those emails are often links, and you dont ever want to click those. Those links usually contain software that steals personal data and gives it to the person who sent the message.

This last one is important for Americans, and that is to keep your social security card kept hidden away in a safe place. If someone who wants to do malicious things to your life gets a hold of that, they can do whatever they want with it. Dont take it with you where you go, keep it safe, and dont go giving it out at each and every notice either!

Keep these simple rules in mind and the threat of identity theft will seem minuscule. Knowledge is always the best defense against an unknown threat. Keep in mind, this is your life were talking about, so its up to you to protect it.
